DOGE, Elon Musk’s initiative to cut U.S. government inefficiencies, has caused widespread dysfunction in its first 100 days. Agencies face staffing shortages, service delays, and halted operations, despite claims of $160 billion in savings. Critics argue the chaos outweighs benefits, and the future of the program is now uncertain.

One hundred days into the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative — led by tech billionaire Elon Musk and backed by former President Donald Trump — the promise of a leaner, more cost-effective federal government appears mired in controversy, confusion, and inefficiency. While DOGE claims it has saved taxpayers $160 billion, critics and insiders argue that the initiative has caused widespread disruption across government agencies.
At the Social Security Administration, senior officials with no frontline experience are replacing laid-off claims processors, leading to longer wait times for vulnerable populations. Meanwhile, at the IRS, connectivity issues following the push to end remote work have derailed the tax season. Staff are using personal hotspots to stay online, resulting in frequent crashes.
DOGE’s sweeping cost-cutting measures include canceling nearly 500,000 government credit cards and capping spending on others. These changes have led to absurd workarounds — such as a CDC lab waiting a month to secure $200 worth of dry ice, which eventually cost $100 more due to unnecessary shipping.
The initiative’s impacts span 14 federal agencies, with employees from scientific research to humanitarian aid departments being laid off. One of the most shocking developments is the near-shutdown of the U.S. Agency for International Development, with 80% of its aid programs canceled and its staff set for termination by September.
Elon Musk, who will step back from DOGE next month, has admitted mistakes but maintains his team has uncovered massive fraud and inefficiencies. Yet critics argue DOGE lacks transparency, exaggerates savings, and is dismantling essential government functions without viable alternatives.

As governance experts warn of a lasting brain drain and operational paralysis, the long-term effects of DOGE remain uncertain, with mounting evidence suggesting the cure may be worse than the disease.
