AAP celebrates the bail of former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, accusing the central government of politically motivated imprisonment. The decision is seen as a boost ahead of Delhi Assembly elections.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has welcomed the Supreme Court's decision to grant bail to former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, calling it a victory for justice. Sisodia, who was arrested in February 2023 in connection with alleged irregularities in the 2021-22 excise policy, had spent over 17 months in jail. AAP leaders argue that his imprisonment was driven by political malice rather than legitimate legal grounds, as no financial wrongdoing was uncovered during the lengthy investigation.

Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh expressed hope that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is also incarcerated in the same case, would soon receive bail. Singh emphasized that Sisodia's prolonged detention was a misuse of power by the central government, describing the legal process as a form of punishment without a verdict. He claimed that the bail is a strong rebuke to what he called the "dictatorship" of the central government.

Sisodia’s release comes just months before the Delhi Assembly elections, providing a significant morale boost to AAP, which has governed the capital since 2015. The party, however, faced a setback in the 2024 national elections, losing all four Lok Sabha seats it contested in Delhi. Singh believes the bail decision will rejuvenate AAP’s campaign ahead of the upcoming state elections.

In contrast, the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) cautioned against interpreting the bail as an acquittal. BJP Delhi chief Virendra Sachdeva pointed out that the charges against Sisodia remain active, and the legal battle is far from over.

Sisodia, who was responsible for several key portfolios, including finance, education, and health, during his tenure, has been a central figure in AAP’s governance model.
