In the wake of the disturbing atrocities against women in Manipur, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha has launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government. Chadha resurfaced an old tweet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from February 2017, where PM Modi had stated, "Those who cannot ensure peace in the state have no right to govern Manipur" when the Congress' Okram Ibobi Singh was the Chief Minister.
In response, the AAP MP held a placard featuring PM Modi's tweet and demanded the immediate removal of the BJP government in Manipur and the imposition of President's Rule in the violence-hit northeastern state.
The outrage has intensified following the circulation of a May 4 video showing two women from conflicting communities being paraded naked by a group of men, which went viral on social media. As a result, opposition leaders are calling for Chief Minister Biren Singh's resignation and the imposition of President's Rule in Manipur.
The situation in Manipur has led to massive protests and sloganeering during the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament, with the opposition pressing for a discussion and a statement from PM Modi on the matter.
In his first comment on the Manipur situation, PM Modi expressed deep concern, calling the incident shameful for society. He urged all Chief Ministers to take strict measures to ensure law and order and emphasized that the issue of a woman's honor should transcend politics, whether in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, or Manipur.
