AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi defends his controversial "Jai Palestine" remark during Lok Sabha oath-taking. The incident sparks debate over constitutional adherence and potential disqualification. Owaisi remains defiant, citing concerns for Palestinian suffering amid calls for his removal from Parliament.
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has backed down on his comment that elicited a lot of controversy which included shifting from the ‘Jai Hind’ slogan to ‘Jai Palestine’ during his oath-taking ceremony in the 18th Lok Sabha. This is Tuesday’s event that has caused controversy and the demand to dismiss him from the Parliament.
Owaisi, who emerged victorious for the fifth time in succession in Hyderabad, ended his affirmation with ‘Jai Bhim, Jai Meem, Jai Telangana, Jai Palestine. ’ This departure from the prescribed form of affirmation in the Lower House led to an instant controversy.
In response to the controversy, Owaisi said: “Let them do whatever they want to do and these threats will not work on me anymore. ” He also dared his critics to point out where his statement was unconstitutional.
The occurrence led Pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab to remind the MLAs that only the oath or affirmation in the prescribed form would be taken. The BJP IT cell head, Amit Malviya, went further by claiming Owaisi could be disqualified from his Lok Sabha membership for ‘being inclined to a foreign state. ’
In defense of his decision, Owaisi noted, “The people there are suffering. Mahatma Gandhi has uttered so many things about Palestine, one can go read. ”
This controversy arises in the backdrop of the recently concluded Owaisi electoral win, where he had beaten BJP’s Madhavi Latha by a huge 3,38,087 votes.
Thus, while the debate goes on, one needs to ask how this event will change the dynamics of the parliamentary work or Owaisi’s political career.
