Social Media Giants Respond to Indian User Complaints: Instagram Takes the Lead with 64% Response Rate

Meta's Facebook and Instagram took action against a significant number of complaints raised by users in India in March 2023. According to the latest India Monthly Report, Facebook responded to approximately 45% of grievances raised by users, while Instagram acted on 64% of the complaints.

Facebook Users Left in the Cold: Platform Responds to Less Than One-Fourth of Content Grievances

When it comes to user complaints, Facebook doesn't seem to be very responsive. According to recent reports, they only take action on a small fraction of grievances raised by users whose accounts have been hacked (8%), or who have experienced inappropriate or abusive content (22%), and bullying or harassment (23%).

The platform responded to less than one-fourth of grievances where users objected to the content they claimed showed nudity, partial nudity, or sexual act. In a recent report, it was revealed that Facebook received a whopping 7,193 complaints from users but only offered tools to help resolve the issue in 1,903 cases.

Facebook's response to the majority of grievances raised by users seems to be a cold shoulder. Among the 5,290 reports that required a specialized review, the platform only took action on a measly 1,300 of them, adhering strictly to its policies.

The details of action taken on the additional 1,300 reports were not disclosed by Facebook. However, the company acted on around 38 million pieces of content that violated its community guidelines

Facebook cracks down on violators: 38 million pieces of content were removed in March 2023!

The details of action taken on the additional 1,300 reports were not disclosed by Facebook. However, the company acted on around 38 million pieces of content that violated its community guidelines. Facebook took action on 32 million spam content, 2.4 million content that violated the policy around adult nudity and sexual activity, and 2.2 million violent and graphic content.

User Empowerment: Instagram Takes Action on Over Half of User Complaints, Offers Tools to Resolve Issues in 98.57% of Cases

On the other hand, Instagram took action on 64% of the grievances raised by users, which was higher than Facebook. According to the latest report, Instagram was more responsive to user complaints, taking action on 5,936 out of 9,226 grievances received.

What's more? The platform provided tools to resolve issues in a whopping 4,280 cases. That's a lot of user empowerment!

Nude but Not Hacked: Instagram's Inconsistent Response to User Complaints

Instagram took action on the majority of complaints regarding explicit content, responding to 84% of the 465 grievances raised by users who reported seeing nudity or sexual activity on the platform.

Despite its otherwise impressive record, Instagram seems to be dropping the ball when it comes to accounts being hacked, taking the least amount of action on those grievances.

Out of the remaining 4,946 reports that required a specialized review, Instagram reviewed content as per its policies and took action on only 1,656 of them. The report did not disclose the specifics of the policies or categories behind the 1,656 complaints on which Instagram took action.

The Ugly Truth of Social Media: Facebook and Instagram's Top Content Violations Revealed

Instagram took action against around 3 million pieces of content on its platform alone, and unsurprisingly, the leading violations on both Facebook and Instagram fell under the categories of "Adult Nudity and Sexual Activity," "Violent and Graphic Content," and "Bullying and Harassment."

Regrettably, these types of content persistently create problems on social media platforms. Meta received only one order from the Grievances Appellate Committee (GAC), which it acted on. The GAC looks into complaints from users who are not satisfied with the resolution of social media majors.

Nudity, Violence, and Harassment: The Top Violations on Facebook and Instagram in India
