Armenia Warned of Consequences by Russia:-

Russia does not seem to be Happywith its ‘friend’ Armenia’s plans of becoming a part of the International Criminal Court(ICC).

Reason for Russia’s Restlessness

RIA, a state Russian news agency, has reported that Armenia is being warned of having to face “serious consequences” if it decides to join the ICC as a member state. While calling Armenia’s plans  “absolutely unacceptable”, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation has cautioned Yerevan, the capital of the Republic of Armenia, against consenting to comply with the Rome Statute of the ICC. The Rome Statute is an international treaty that established the ICC giving it jurisdiction to try the most serious crimes of international concern.

Repercussions It May Have

A Russian Foreign Ministry source has revealed, "Moscow considers official Yerevan's plans to accede to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court to be absolutely unacceptable against the background of the recent illegal and legally null and void warrants of the ICC against the Russian leadership". The two ex-Soviet countries are historical allies, hence the Yerevan’s actions may prove to have “extremely negative consequences” to their bilateral ties. Armenia has not reacted to Russia’s statement as of now.

Previously, the ICC issued an arrest warrant against Vladimir Putin, the President of the Russian Federation, for the illegal deportation of thousands of Ukrainian children. It is considered a bold move, since no international court until now has issued an arrest warrant against the Big 5 of the United Nations Security Council, which are Russia, the U.S. China, the UK and France.

There is news that Putin will be travelling to Turkey and South Africa, the latter being a state Party to the ICC. It will be interesting to see how global politics unfold in light of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
