Assam CM’s Statement Over Opposition Coalition's 'INDIA' Name Sparks Row

Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) responded strongly to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's criticism of the opposition coalition's name, 'Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA)'. Sarma had called the name a 'colonial hangover' and emphasized the importance of using 'Bharat' instead of 'India' as the country's name.

The Chief Minister's post came after the opposition declared the new name for their bloc as 'INDIA' during a meeting in Bengaluru. In response, Congress leaders swiftly reminded Sarma of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's use of the term 'India' in various national programs and appeals.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh took to Twitter, ridiculing Sarma's remarks and pointing out that Modi had introduced schemes like 'Digital India' and 'Skill India', alluding to the fact that even the Prime Minister used 'India' in these initiatives. Ramesh questioned Sarma's objections to the opposition coalition's use of the name.

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate also criticized Sarma's tweet, suggesting he needed a better writer. She sarcastically remarked that Sarma seemed preoccupied with his geo-location on Twitter bio.

The tension arose as the opposition coalition decided to go with the acronym 'INDIA' for their alliance, prompting Sarma to express his views on choosing 'Bharat' over 'India' to break away from colonial associations.

The spat highlights the ongoing political dynamics in the country, with parties engaging in heated exchanges over symbolic matters such as names and identities. The opposition's move to form a united front under the 'INDIA' banner and Sarma's response has added to the charged atmosphere ahead of future political events.
