Assam reported its first Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) case this season, with a 10-month-old child testing positive in Dibrugarh. The infant is stable and under treatment at AMCH. HMPV, a common respiratory virus, is also detected in Gujarat and Maharashtra, with health authorities closely monitoring the situation.

The first case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection this season was reported in Assam after a 10-month-old child tested positive. The infant is currently undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) and is in stable condition, according to hospital authorities.

Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan, superintendent of AMCH, stated that the child had been admitted with cold-related symptoms four days ago. Routine testing conducted by the Lahowal-based ICMR-Regional Medical Research Centre confirmed the presence of HMPV. “The virus is common, and there is no cause for alarm,” Dr. Bhuyan reassured.

Since 2014, the Dibrugarh district has recorded 110 cases of HMPV. According to senior scientist Dr. Biswajit Borkakoty from ICMR-RMRC, the virus is detected annually, often between November and May.

HMPV, first identified in 2001, is a respiratory virus responsible for 4-16% of acute respiratory infections globally. It generally causes mild cold-like symptoms, but infants and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness.

Similar cases have been reported in other states this year. Gujarat has recorded three cases, including an eight-year-old boy from Sabarkantha district. Maharashtra has also detected two suspected cases in Nagpur. Health officials are monitoring the situation closely, with samples from suspected cases sent for advanced testing.

While the current detections highlight the virus’s prevalence, health authorities emphasize that routine hygiene practices and timely medical intervention can effectively manage its spread and impact.
