Assam Rifles personnel injured in encounter with suspected militants near Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border

Guwahati, April 16: An Assam Rifles personnel sustained injuries in an encounter with suspected militants in Assam's Tinsukia district on Tuesday, officials said.
According to Tinsukia Superintendent of Police (SP) Gaurav Abhijit Dilip, the incident occurred near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border this morning, close to Namdang in Margherita.
"A convoy of 31 Assam Rifles was moving from Changlang in Arunachal Pradesh towards Margherita when unknown miscreants opened fire on them. The security forces also retaliated," he informed PTI.
Dilip further disclosed that during the exchange of fire, one Assam Rifles personnel sustained injuries.
"While there are reports of an injury on the attackers' side, we are yet to confirm it. A joint search operation is currently underway," Dilip added.
The Tinsukia SP also stated that the identity of the militants involved is not immediately known, but groups like NSCN and ULFA(I) are known to be active in the area.
Meanwhile, United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) Publicity Department Member Captain Rumel Asom claimed responsibility for the attack.
The email asserted that 'Operation Pratishodh' was executed to avenge the deaths of two cadres of the banned militant outfit.
