Julian Assange faces a crucial court ruling that could clear his extradition to the U.S. over the 2010 WikiLeaks disclosures, which his wife calls exposing "literal war crimes."

Assange’s lawyers to make a last-ditch effort to block extradition to the US.

Stella Assange, the wife of the Australian has described Monday as a ‘definitive’ day in the legal battle. The High Court in London will consider if Assange can appeal against his extradition on several grounds, including the fact that it would be an infringement of his freedom of expression.

Assange’s lawyers said the court ruling against allowing an appeal would mean Assange could be on a plane to the United States within 24 hours although they would also seek an emergency injunction from the European Court of Human Rights.

The 52-year-old Australian has been fighting extradition since 2010 when WikiLeaks published a cache of leaked military files and diplomatic cables showing that the United States had killed civilians in unreported incidents during the war in Afghanistan.

US authorities claim that Assange put lives at risk with the leaks in 2010-2011 and have charged him with 18 counts including violation of the Espionage Act. His legal team says the case is a politically motivated attack on journalism and the press.

Dozens of supporters gathered outside the London court on Monday to protest Assange as a hero who exposed U.  S.  crimes and should not be prosecuted. However, US officials argue that the leaked files put the lives of intelligence officers at risk.
