Barack Obama has praised Harvard University for resisting Trump administration efforts to curb campus activism. Despite losing $2.2 billion in federal grants, Harvard defended academic freedom and student rights, setting an example for other institutions. Obama called the administration’s actions “unlawful” and urged more universities to protect intellectual inquiry and debate.

Former U.S. President Barack Obama has voiced strong support for Harvard University following its decision to resist pressure from the Trump administration to suppress campus activism. Harvard has recently come under financial strain after the administration withheld grants amounting to $2.2 billion as retaliation for the university's continued support of student-led demonstrations and freedom of expression.

In a public statement on X (formerly Twitter), Obama praised Harvard for refusing to comply with what he described as “unlawful and ham-handed” attempts to stifle academic freedom. He noted that the institution had demonstrated courage and leadership by defending students' rights to protest and engage in rigorous intellectual debate.

“Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions – rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking concrete steps to make sure all students at Harvard can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect,” Obama wrote. “Let’s hope other institutions follow suit.”

The Trump administration’s financial crackdown is part of a broader effort to curtail what it views as disruptive or politically charged student movements. Harvard’s refusal to comply has made it a focal point in the national debate surrounding freedom of expression on college campuses.

Obama’s endorsement is likely to intensify the spotlight on the issue, especially as universities across the United States grapple with how to balance donor interests, federal funding, and student activism. For Harvard, the decision to stand firm may come with economic consequences, but it has also earned the institution praise for upholding the core values of academic freedom and civil discourse.
