Akshay Shivaram, 29, died after a dry tree branch fell on him in Bengaluru. Suffering 12 head injuries, he succumbed after five days in a coma. His family filed a complaint blaming civic negligence. Police have registered a case under culpable homicide, and investigations are underway into the BBMP’s inaction.
A 29-year-old man, Akshay Shivaram, lost his life after sustaining severe head injuries when a dry tree branch fell on him while he was riding his scooter in Bengaluru’s Hanumanthanagar area. The incident occurred on June 15 near the Brahma Chaitanya Temple, and Akshay passed away on Thursday after five days in a coma.
Akshay, an HR professional, suffered 12 skull fractures in the accident. According to CCTV footage, he lost control of his scooter and crashed into a parked vehicle after being struck. He was not wearing a helmet at the time. Emergency responders rushed him to a private hospital in Jayanagar, where he remained in critical condition until his death.
The local police confirmed receiving the death report around 1 PM on Thursday. Following the tragedy, Akshay’s brother, Benkaraj, filed a complaint against the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the Forest Department. He alleged that both agencies ignored repeated warnings from local residents and temple officials about the dangerous condition of the tree.
Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Authorities have begun investigating possible negligence by civic bodies in maintaining public safety.
This incident has triggered fresh criticism of the BBMP's tree management practices, especially during the monsoon season when such accidents tend to rise. Citizens and activists have long complained about untrimmed branches and poor responses from the authorities to reported hazards.
