The Asian Development Bank has officially granted a loan of $30 million, dedicated to improving Bhutan's technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system.
This initiative aims to enhance the skills and employability of the nation's youth. According to information provided by the Asian Development Bank, the approved loan will facilitate the construction of new infrastructure including buildings, workshops, and hostels.
It will also modernise existing facilities within technical training institutes in Chumey, Samthang, Rangjung, and the rural development training centre in Zhemgang.
Ryotaro Hayashi, ADB Social Sector Economist, remarked, “Against the rising youth unemployment in Bhutan, ADB is ramping up support for the country’s TVET reform strategic plan implementation for transforming product, place, people, and process.”
Hayashi further mentioned, "Through this project, we will enhance accessibility and broaden the reach of TVET programs in collaboration with multiple stakeholders, with a particular focus on improving the skills of workers, including women and youth with disabilities."
He also pointed out, "This endeavor aligns with Bhutan's pursuit of sustainable development."
The press release further indicated that there will be an extra USD 2 million grant, sourced from ADB's Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific. This grant will be specifically allocated to aid in the implementation of the project.
Its primary objective is to enhance the quality, accessibility, and capacity for delivering inclusive education and skills development, with a specific focus on individuals with disabilities.
