Biden announced sweeping new restrictions allowing swift expulsion of migrants crossing the border illegally when arrivals overwhelm capacity, drawing criticism but aimed at "controlling the border."

Last Tuesday, President Joe Biden introduced a range of new measures that seek to address the unprecedented influx of migrants at the United States- Mexico border. The new measures let the authorities immediately expel the migrants found entering the U. S. unlawfully without granting them a chance to present their asylum requests in case the number of arrivals exceeds a certain number per day and the border is considered overwhelmed.

Biden stated in a speech that “this action will help us gain control of our border,” which has seen a surge of more than 6. There have been over 4 million migrant encounters during his administration up to now. However, these measures elicited criticism from immigration activists and some Democratic Congresspersons.

“It is sad to see that politics are now leading the immigration debate to a tighter immigration by every passing day,” said Jennie Murray of the National Immigration Forum.

The restrictions introduce a law enacted in 1952 that enables the president to “suspend the entry” of anyone “whose presence in the United States … is deemed likely to be prejudicial to the interests of the United States. The same regulation was however used by the Trump administration to ban immigration from several Muslim-dominated nations.

Asylum will remain processed as usual at legal ports of entry, but this study shows that if the 7-day average of border crossings is more than 2,500, new measures will be applied. They would stay constant until the average will be 1,500 or below for a week.

Others focus on the time taken to handle immigration cases in court and facilitate quicker deportations of aliens deemed to have no grounds to be in the U.S.

The White House said that the Republicans blocked their attempts at legislation necessitating the use of the executive order, although the rules will likely be challenged legally. Biden called for patience, stating that “doing nothing is not an option” as border influx overwhelms the human capital.
