BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a former Calcutta High Court judge, has been hospitalized with acute pancreatitis and gastrointestinal sepsis. Admitted to the ICU in Kolkata, his condition is described as critically ill but stable. A medical board is overseeing his treatment as doctors monitor him round-the-clock.

BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay has been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of a private hospital in Kolkata after experiencing severe abdominal discomfort and vomiting. Hospital authorities confirmed on Sunday that the 63-year-old parliamentarian is critically ill but in a stable condition under constant observation.
Gangopadhyay, a former Calcutta High Court judge, was brought to the hospital on Saturday. Medical investigations have since revealed that he is suffering from acute pancreatitis complicated by gastrointestinal sepsis. In response to the seriousness of his condition, a multi-disciplinary medical board has been formed to oversee his treatment and ensure coordinated care.
Doctors say the MP is being continuously monitored and is receiving all necessary interventions in the ICU. “He is critically ill but remains stable at the moment,” the hospital stated in an official release.
Abhijit Gangopadhyay had resigned from his judicial post in March 2024 before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party. He contested and won the Tamluk Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal during the 2024 general elections, marking his entry into active politics.

Party leaders and supporters have expressed concern over his health, while hospital sources remain cautiously optimistic about his recovery, citing that the next 48 hours will be crucial.
This sudden medical emergency has temporarily paused Gangopadhyay’s political engagements, even as the BJP continues to monitor his condition closely.
