Bournvita is no more a ‘Health drink’

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry wrote to e-commerce companies stating that the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSS Act 2006) should not designate Bournvita and comparable beverages as health drinks.
On April 10, the Ministry of Commerce sent a letter to the online retailers suggesting that they remove Bournvita and other beverages from the "health drinks" category.
National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), a statutory body constituted under Section (3) of the Commission of Protection of Child Rights (CPCR) Act, 2005 after its inquiry under Section 14 of CRPC Act 2005 concluded that there is no 'health drink' defined under FSS Act 2006, rules and regulations submitted by FSSAI and Mondelez India Food Pvt Ltd," the ministry said in a notification, dated April 10, the ministry announced in a notification dated April 10.

In a notification to the company, the NCPCR also asked Bournvita, the candy manufacturer, to provide a thorough report or explanation regarding the matter. In response to a complaint, the NCPCR launched legal action against Bournvita, alleging that the beverage misrepresents its nutritional value and makes claims about supporting children's growth and development while actually packing a high sugar and other potentially dangerous ingredient list.
