On April 10, the Ministry of Commerce sent a letter to the online retailers suggesting that they remove Bournvita and other beverages from the "health drinks" category.

Bournvita's high sugar level made headlines a year ago. A few days later, according to Economic Times, quoting PTI, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) demanded that the company, owned by Mondelez India, remove all "misleading" commercials that touted the drink's numerous health benefits. The beverage's high sugar content was shown in a video, which prompted the child rights organization to take action. The beverage has long been promoted as a "health drink".

In a notification to the company, the NCPCR also asked Bournvita, the candy manufacturer, to provide a thorough report or explanation regarding the matter. In response to a complaint, the NCPCR launched legal action against Bournvita, alleging that the beverage misrepresents its nutritional value and makes claims about supporting children's growth and development while actually packing a high sugar and other potentially dangerous ingredient list.
