The Calcutta High Court condemned the "gruesome" rape-murder of a doctor in Kolkata, justifying doctors' protests. The court ordered the former hospital principal to take leave and requested his resignation letter. The autopsy revealed severe torture, prompting calls for enhanced security measures for healthcare professionals.
The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday strongly condemned the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, describing the incident as "so gruesome." The court's observations came during a hearing of multiple petitions related to the case that has sparked nationwide outrage.
The bench emphasized the justification for the emotional responses from protesting doctors, stating, "We cannot gag the press... what assurance are you (State) giving to doctors? They are hurt. The incident is so gruesome. They (doctors) are justified in expressing their emotions."
In a significant development, the court directed Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the hospital, to go on extended leave. This order came just a day after Ghosh's resignation and swift appointment as principal of CNMC college. The court expressed interest in examining Ghosh's resignation letter, requesting its production.
The victim, a post-graduate trainee doctor, was found murdered in the hospital's seminar hall where she had gone to rest during her overnight duty. The autopsy report revealed harrowing details, indicating rape and torture. A deep wound was found inside her private parts, suggesting genital torture, and there were signs of her head being struck against a wall or floor. Multiple injuries were noted across her body, with bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts.
Law enforcement has arrested a man named Sanjoy Roy in connection with the crime. Additionally, four junior doctors who were on duty with the victim have been summoned for questioning.

As the investigation continues, the medical community and the public alike are calling for swift justice and comprehensive reforms to ensure the safety of those dedicated to saving lives.
