Canada has expelled China’s diplomat, Zhao Wei, declaring her
a “persona non grata” and ordering her to leave the country within five days.
This move comes in response to accusations of Chinese political interference in
Canada, particularly targeting opposition lawmaker Michael Chong and his
relatives in Hong Kong after he accused China of human rights abuses.
Canada’s spy agency released a report accusing Ms. Zhao of
gathering information on Mr. Chong and his relatives, prompting the expulsion.
In retaliation, China has ordered the removal of Jennifer
Lynn Lalonde, Canada’s diplomat in its Shanghai Consulate, and warned of
further reactions, marking a significant deterioration in relations between the
two countries.
The accusations of Chinese interference in Canadian affairs also include attempts to interfere in Canadian elections, leading to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement of an independent special rapporteur to investigate the claims.
Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly emphasized
that Canada would not tolerate any form of foreign interference in its internal
affairs and would take necessary action to protect its citizens.
Canada’s spy agency has been directed to pass on information
about threats to members of parliament and their families. The move by Ottawa
marks a sharp escalation of tensions with Beijing and may lead to further
retaliatory measures by China.
