Canada has expelled a high-ranking Indian diplomat as part of an investigation into credible allegations that the Indian government may have had links to the assassination of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil.
Nijjar, a prominent supporter of an independent Sikh homeland known as Khalistan, was killed on June 18 outside a Sikh cultural center in Surrey, British Columbia.
Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has notified Parliament that the country's intelligence agencies are looking into the allegations. During the last G-20 conference, Trudeau brought up the issue with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and made it clear that any engagement from the Indian government would be unacceptable. He pleaded with India to help in the probe.
The probe led to the deportation of the chief of Indian intelligence in Canada, as revealed by Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly. If accurate, she said, such engagement would constitute a serious threat to Canadian independence.
Trudeau stressed Canada’s grave worries over the matter and asked India to work together to find a solution. He also mentioned that Canada has been actively challenging Indian intelligence agencies with the claims and has been working closely with its friends to do so.
In India, the Khalistan movement is illegal because of the threat it poses to Indian sovereignty by pushing for an independent Sikh country. However, the Sikh diaspora in places like Canada and the UK continue to show support for it.
