The CBI has accused ex-principal Sandip Ghosh of RG Kar Medical College of colluding with co-accused for wrongful gain by awarding them hospital contracts. The investigation reveals Ghosh’s alleged criminal nexus with vendors and his security aide Afsar Ali, raising questions about tendering processes and corruption within Kolkata's healthcare institutions.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has accused Sandip Ghosh, former principal of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, of having a “criminal nexus” with his co-accused for wrongful gain. This allegation forms part of the CBI’s probe into corruption at RG Kar, following Ghosh's removal from his post after the August 9 rape and murder of a trainee doctor, allegedly by civic volunteer Sanjay Roy. The trainee doctor's case is also being handled by the CBI.
Ghosh, along with three other individuals—Biplab Singha, Suman Hazra, and Afsar Ali—was arrested and produced before a special court in Alipur on September 3. The agency detailed how Ghosh allegedly used his position to favor the co-accused, awarding them lucrative contracts for hospital services. Specifically, Singha and Hazra, vendors Ghosh had known from his previous postings at Murshidabad Medical College, reportedly benefited from contracts awarded at RG Kar after Ghosh's transfer.
Afsar Ali, who served as Ghosh's security aide, was similarly favored when a contract for a café at RG Kar was allegedly awarded to M/s Eshan Cafe, a firm managed by Ali's wife, Nargis Khanum, but controlled by Ali. The CBI contends that this contract was predetermined, with M/s Eshan Cafe being the only bidder fulfilling technical criteria, raising concerns about the legitimacy of the tendering process.

The investigation extends to potential malpractice involving the sale of biomedical waste, with the CBI delving into Ali’s role in these activities. The corruption case has cast a shadow over the reputation of one of Kolkata’s most prominent medical institutions and remains under close scrutiny.
