The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has formally charged Sanjay Roy for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident occurred on August 9, when the victim, taking a break from her shift, was attacked in the hospital's seminar room. According to the CBI's charge sheet, Roy, a civic volunteer with the local police, entered the seminar room around 4:03 a.m. as captured by CCTV footage. He emerged after about 30 minutes, during which time the crime is believed to have been committed.

The victim's body was discovered by a junior doctor the following morning. The post-mortem revealed she had been sexually assaulted and murdered, with 25 internal and external injuries noted. Contrary to initial speculations of gang involvement, the CBI charge sheet confirms that Roy acted alone.

Roy, who initially denied the charges, claimed that when he entered the room, the victim was already unconscious. However, his failure to inform the authorities immediately and his inconsistent statements during a lie-detector test led the CBI to accuse him of misleading the investigation.

In a related development, the CBI has also arrested Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, the ex-principal of RG Kar Medical College, for attempting to tamper with evidence and mislead the victim’s family. Additionally, a local police officer has been detained for alleged involvement in covering up the crime.
