The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned five doctors for questioning in connection with the rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The agency also interrogated the officer-in-charge of Tala police station, under whose jurisdiction the incident occurred.

This development comes amid heightened tensions following a violent attack on the hospital by unidentified individuals. Around 12:40 AM, a mob stormed the facility, vandalizing the emergency department, nursing station, and medicine stores. They also damaged CCTV cameras and disrupted an ongoing demonstration by junior doctors.

In response to the vandalism, nine individuals have been detained. Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal stated that an investigation is underway, while also suggesting that a "malicious media campaign" may have exacerbated the situation.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that the vandals were "outsiders" and not connected to the student movement. She claimed to have video evidence showing BJP and DYFI members among the attackers.

Governor C.V. Ananda Bose visited the hospital, condemning the vandalism as "a shame to civil society" and assuring justice to the agitating doctors.

The CBI has requested call details of a civic volunteer arrested in connection with the rape and murder case. As the investigation intensifies, a mobile forensic unit from the West Bengal Police has been deployed to gather evidence from the hospital's emergency ward.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with political parties trading accusations and doctors resuming their strike. As the situation remains tense, authorities are working to maintain order and pursue justice in this high-profile case.
