Central Railway steps towards women's safety by installing CCTV and TalkBack systems in Mumbai Suburban Trains' ladies' coaches, enhancing commuter security.
To prioritise women's safety, Central Railway has introduced closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) and TalkBack systems in the ladies coaches of Mumbai Suburban Trains.
This initiative aims to create a safer commuting environment for women passengers, promoting a sense of security during their everyday journeys.
The Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, Shivraj Manaspure, revealed the plan to enhance women's safety, which involves the installation of CCTV cameras in 771 ladies' coaches, with 199 cameras already functional in ladies' compartments.
Additionally, TalkBack systems will be implemented in all 151 EMU Rakes designated for ladies, for which the purchase order has been placed. Furthermore, 80 EMU Rakes of Central Railway have already been equipped with TalkBack systems.
Central Railway plans to strengthen security by installing CCTV cameras in 589 coaches of Mumbai Suburban Trains in the financial year 2023-2024. Currently, 39 ladies coaches are undergoing installation, equipped with advanced features like Infrared (IR) vision to ensure women's safety and deter potential crimes.
The newly installed coaches enable live-streaming of CCTV footage, which is assistance in investigations in criminal cases. The TalkBack system provides women passengers with a powerful tool to communicate with the local train guard during emergencies.
By pressing a button on the system, they can directly speak to the guard via an inbuilt microphone. Additionally, the guard's cabin also has a TalkBack system, enabling them to respond promptly and alert the motorman if needed.
Shivraj Manaspure stated that Central Railway plans to gradually implement this system in all women's compartments, including first-class, across their suburban fleet over the next two years.
