Union Culture Minister G Kishan Reddy on Monday assured lawmakers that the Tiger will continue to be recognised as India's national animal not cow.
He said this while replying to a series of queries from Bhagirath Choudhary, a member of Parliament for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Choudhary had asked whether there were plans to make the cow, a revered symbol, the country's official animal and if legislation will be adopted to safeguard and revitalize the cow within the context of Indian and "Sanatan culture."
Minister Reddy's statement emphasized that the Government of India has already named the Tiger and the Peacock as the 'National Animal' and the 'National Bird' of India. The Wild Life (Protection) Act of 1972 now includes these species in its Schedule-I list of protected species. After going unmentioned for some time, on May 30, 2011, the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) formally reinstated the tiger and peacock as the country's "National Animal" and "National Bird," respectively.
Minister Reddy said that the topic of recognising the cow as the national animal is within the purview of the state's legislative authority, despite questions about whether the high courts in Allahabad and Jaipur had directed or commented on accelerating the process. He went on to say that the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, an initiative of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, is helping to foster and safeguard indigenous cattle breeds.
The goal of this programme is to increase the number of native cattle breeds in the country. The Animal Welfare Board of India has also been set up to ensure the safety of cows and their offspring.
In a recent statement, India's Minister of Culture made it clear that the country has no plans to officially recognise the cow as the national animal of India. The government's efforts center on safeguarding and promoting native cattle breeds.
