The Indian government has declared June 25 as "Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas" to commemorate the 1975 Emergency imposition. Home Minister Amit Shah stated this decision aims to honor those who fought against the abuse of power during that period.

In a major decision, the BJP led Central government has decided to observe June 25 as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ or ‘Emergency day’ to mark the dark era in the Indian democracy. The decision was made on Friday, and federal Home Minister Amit Shah posted the official notification of the government on social media.
It represents the anniversary of the Emergency declared by the then Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi – a period in which the majority of civil liberties were formally abrogated for more than two years. The government’s notification reads that this day will dedicate itself to “remembering all those who endured and resisted the outrageous misuse of authority during the Emergency.
Amit Shah, the Home Minister, clarified that this decision of Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister, is to pay homage to the millions who fought to retrieve democracy ‘despite being inexplicably persecuted by an authoritarian government. ’ According to Shah, ‘this would help to keep the flame of individual liberty and the defence of our democracy burning brightly in every Indian.
The action has made political debate, the BJP ruling party lambasted the Congress party action during the emergency period. In its editorial today, Shah accused former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of having ‘a dictatorial mindset’ He said, ‘lakhs of people were jailed for no reason and the media was muzzled.
This declaration comes at a time when there is political strife, with the Opposition recently using ‘Jantar Mantar’ to protest and holding up photographs of the Constitution in the Lok Sabha. In response to these protests, Prime Minister Modi said that people who put the Emergency into place have no right to speak about their affection towards the Constitution of the country.
This move is bound to promote the political discourses regarding the democracy and some historical incidents in the country by declaring it as “Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas”. While the nation is getting ready to celebrate this new found day of its own the reaction of different political parties and the public would be an interesting thing to wait for given the fact that the period being celebrated here is not exactly a favourite chapter in Indian history.
