On Sunday, ISRO announced that the GSLV Mark 3 (LVM 3) launch vehicle, which effectively launched the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft, successfully executed a scheduled Orbit Reduction Maneuver to bring it into closer proximity to the moon. ISRO plans to perform a similar maneuver on August 9th.
"The spacecraft successfully underwent a planned orbit reduction maneuver. The retrofiring of engines brought it closer to the Moon's surface, now to 170 km x 4313 km.
The next operation to further reduce the orbit is scheduled for August 9, 2023, between 13:00 and 14:00 Hrs. IST.", the space agency tweeted.
In the meantime, on Sunday, the space organization released the initial pictures of the moon taken by Chandrayaan-3, India's third lunar mission. Chandrayaan-3 took breathtaking pictures of the moon's landscape following its entry into the lunar orbit on Saturday.
"The Moon, as viewed by #Chandrayaan3 spacecraft during Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI) on August 5, 2023." was shared on the official Twitter account of the mission along with a video with the inaugural visuals recieved from the spacecraft.
Having journeyed around two-thirds of the way to the Moon from its launch, the Chandrayaan-3 probe seamlessly entered lunar orbit on Saturday, as confirmed by ISRO.
As Chandrayaan-3 gets one more step closer to the moon the landing is scheduled on 23rd August, 2023. After touchdown, it will function for a single lunar day, lasting roughly 14 days on Earth. The duration of one day on the Moon is equivalent to two weeks on earth.
