The growing friendship between the U.S. and Taiwan has angered China, in consequence of which it has launched a three-day military exercise in the vicinity of the island.

Taiwan’s Predicament

Taiwan is facing the wrath of China, which has begun drills near the island on Saturday, just a day after Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen’s brief visit to the United States. China’s activities in the region are being observed by the Taiwan defence ministry which has reported multiple air force sorties. It also stated that while keeping an eye on People's Liberation Army's Rocket Force which is in charge of China's land-based missile system, it spotted 70 Chinese aircraft, including Su-30 fighters and H-6 bombers, along with 11 ships, around Taiwan at 0800 GMT on Sunday. The ministry reported, "Regarding the movements of the Chinese communists' Rocket Force, the nation's military also has a close grasp through the joint intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance system, and air defence forces remain on high alert."

These combat readiness patrols and drills were also broadcasted by the Chinese state television, stating "Under the unified command of the theatre joint operations command center, multiple types of units carried out simulated joint precision strikes on key targets on Taiwan island and the surrounding sea areas, and continue to maintain an offensive posture around the island." A short animation of the simulated attacks has been posted by the Chinese military's Eastern Theatre Command on its WeChat account, depicting the firing of missiles in the region into land, sea, and air near Taiwan, two of which burst into flames as soon as they hit their targets.

Beijing has stubbornly maintained its position that Taiwan is a part of its ‘One China’ ideology claiming the island to be a part of its territory.
