China vowed to retaliate after President Trump raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 125%, accusing the U.S. of undermining global trade norms. Beijing called for fair negotiations but warned it would defend its interests if necessary, intensifying an already volatile trade standoff between the two economic superpowers.

China has issued a stern warning to the United States following President Donald Trump’s decision to hike tariffs on Chinese imports to 125%, escalating an already tense trade dispute between the world’s two largest economies. Beijing condemned the move, calling it a blow to global economic stability and a threat to the multilateral trading system. Chinese officials accused Washington of acting unilaterally and undermining international rules.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that China would not tolerate the infringement of its national interests and criticized the U.S. approach as politically motivated and unsustainable. “The actions of the United States will only isolate itself further,” Lin said, asserting that China has the will and capacity to respond appropriately.

China’s commerce ministry echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that while the door to negotiations remains open, any talks must be conducted on equal terms. Spokeswoman He Yongqian warned that China would "fight to the end" if provoked, urging the U.S. to pursue dialogue over confrontation.

Trump’s dramatic tariff increase followed his announcement of a temporary pause on similar measures for other trading partners, whom he praised for engaging diplomatically. However, he singled out China, accusing the country of disrespecting global markets and exploiting trade systems. In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed the new tariff rate was a necessary step to protect American industries and interests.
