Warns of SC Intervention

CJI Chandrachud strongly reacts to the "disturbing" Manipur women video, calling it a "Constitutional failure." The Supreme Court warns the government that if it does not address the matter promptly, the court will be compelled to take necessary action.

On Thursday, the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, pressed the government to take immediate action in response to the viral video portraying Manipur women being paraded naked by a group of men. The CJI, deeply troubled by the incident, condemned the video and deemed it a grave constitutional failure.

Chandrachud expressed his deep concerns regarding the videos circulated yesterday, emphasizing, "We are very deeply disturbed about the videos distributed yesterday. We are expressing our deep concern. It is time that the government steps up and takes action. This is unacceptable."

In response to the distressing situation, the Supreme Court has demanded information from the government about the measures that are being undertaken to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Additionally, the apex court made it clear that if the government fails to take appropriate action, it will have no option but to initiate necessary measures to address the issue.

The CJI further expressed, “Using women as instruments of perpetrating violence in a hostile environment is simply unacceptable in a constitutional democracy.”

The Supreme Court has demanded a report from both the Centre and the N Biren Singh-led state government, scheduling a hearing on July 28 to address the matter.

The Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, on Thursday urged the government to take action in the case of the viral video of Manipur women being paraded naked by a group of men. Expressing deep concern about the ‘disturbing’ incident, the CJI condemned the video as a gross constitutional failure.

With the commencement of the monsoon session of Parliament ahead, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow on Thursday over the disturbing viral video showing two women being paraded naked in Manipur. He condemned the incident as a shameful act for any civilized society and assured that those responsible would not escape punishment.

On Thursday, the Manipur Police arrested a person who was reportedly part of the mob involved in parading and assaulting three Kuki women on May 4. Shockingly, the video of this distressing incident surfaced over 2.5 months after it took place.

Over the past two months, the state of Manipur has been engulfed in ethnic violence, leading to a loss of over 150 lives lost and leaving more than 50,000 people injured. The situation continues to remain highly tense, and deeply concerning for the authorities and residents alike.
