Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud rejected a lawyer's plea for Mamata Banerjee's removal in the Kolkata rape case, emphasizing that the court is not a political forum. He warned the lawyer against pursuing political motives, focusing instead on the ongoing investigation and the grievances of protesting junior doctors.
In a stern rebuke on Tuesday, Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud dismissed a senior lawyer's request for the removal of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her alleged handling of the Kolkata rape-murder case. The Supreme Court was engaged in a suo motu hearing regarding the tragic incident involving a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
During the proceedings, the lawyer sought the court’s intervention to demand Banerjee’s resignation, citing her purported negligence in the case. CJI Chandrachud expressed frustration with the political nature of the request, emphasizing that the court's role is not to address political matters but to focus on legal issues.
“This is not a political forum,” Chandrachud asserted, urging the counsel to adhere to legal procedures rather than making political demands. The Chief Justice further clarified that the court’s primary concern is the grievances of junior doctors protesting the case, not the resignation of a political leader.

Chandrachud’s warning was clear: if the lawyer continued to pursue politically motivated arguments, he would be removed from the courtroom. The bench also reviewed a confidential status report from the CBI, noting that any public release could harm the investigation. The CBI was directed to provide a fresh update by September 24, while the junior doctors' forum clarified that their demands were procedural and not political.
The Supreme Court's focus remains on addressing the concerns of the junior doctors and ensuring the ongoing investigation into the case progresses appropriately.
