Scientists braved Antarctica's rough seas to study whales and collect samples, revealing how climate change and melting sea ice impact the Antarctic food web the marine giants depend on.
After weeks of vitriolic threats, in the freezing waters of the Antarctic Peninsula, a group of scientists is conducting its vital health assessments of the giant humpback whales. It is noteworthy that the scientists who are collaborating with the WWF organization are applying such methods as crossbows and drones for capturing skin, blubber, and feces samples from such large whales which are 40 tons at most.
‘It’s time we identified the most vulnerable feeding grounds for the whales to conserve them,’ said Chris Johnson, the globally based whale specialist of the World Wildlife Fund – WWF who was spearheading the trip. ‘Through the health of the whales, we can assess the health of the entire Antarctic ecosystem. ‘
This icy wasteland is filmed by the researchers, who venture into the notoriously treacherous Drake Passage and conduct their study from a tourist cruise vessel. Once near the whales, they take time to shoot crossbow bolts to get small skin and fat samples which helps in determining the diet, stress level, and reproductive health of the animals.
Remote-controlled aerial vehicles offer the ability to monitor the whales and their feeding techniques, such as bubble-net, and assess the physical state of the animals. These are the things that are happening due to climate change, stated Dr. Natalia Botero-Acosta, a whale biologist.
Whales that feed on tiny krill are at risk because as sea ice continues to melt, the population of tiny krill decreases at even faster rates. The krill has to feed on ice algae, which provides them with both food and protection. Explaining the potential impact of the lack of krill, the scientists stated that some species of whales may face a problem with the ccumulation of fat before their long journey.

Their effort is essential for identifying how climate changes the Antarctic food chain and establishing conservation measures for important feeding ground whales. “These are natural functions used to provide fresh air, food, and clean water,” Johnson added. To all of us, such places are useful, "
