A pair of slippers stitched by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi during a recent visit to Sultanpur has become an unexpected center of attention, with offers reaching as high as ₹2 lakh. However, the owner, a local cobbler named Ramchet, steadfastly refuses to part with what he considers a precious memento.

Gandhi had stopped at Ramchet's shop near the district court on July 26, 2024, while in town for a court appearance. During his visit, the MP learned the art of shoe stitching and crafted a pair of slippers. The following day, Gandhi sent Ramchet an electronic shoe-stitching machine as a gift.

Since then, Ramchet's humble shop has become a local attraction, drawing visitors from far and wide who hope to glimpse the famous slippers and perhaps have their own shoes polished by the now-celebrity cobbler.

Ramchet told HT that he has received numerous offers for the slippers, including one for ₹1 lakh from an early morning visitor and another for ₹2 lakh from a seemingly wealthy individual. However, he has turned down all offers, stating that the slippers are priceless to him.

"Why thousands or lakhs, even if someone gives ₹1 crore, I will not sell the slippers," Ramchet declared. He plans to have the slippers framed and displayed in his shop as a cherished memento for as long as he lives.

The cobbler's refusal to sell has only increased interest in the unique item, with many speculating about the identity of the potential buyers. Ramchet, however, maintains that he didn't ask for names or addresses, as he has no intention of selling.

This heartwarming story highlights the personal value sometimes placed on interactions with public figures, transcending monetary worth.
