Jyoti Mirdha and Sawai Singh Choudhary quit Congress, join BJP in Delhi

As the State's Assembly elections are approaching, Jyoti Mirdha, the former Lok Sabha MP from Nagaur, and Rajasthan Congress leader Sawai Singh Choudhary have joined  the BJP.

This was officially announced at the party's New Delhi headquarters.

In the presence of BJP's Rajasthan in-charge, Arun Singh, and State unit president C.P. Joshi, Dr Mirdha, who previously served as a Congress MP representing Nagaur in Rajasthan, and Mr Choudhary, a former bureaucrat, officially became members of the BJP.

Mr Singh expressed, “With the joining of Jyoti Mirdha and Sawai Singh Choudhary, the BJP family has been strengthened further." He further added, “Jyoti Mirdha is a very popular leader.”

While extending a warm welcome, State unit chief C.P. Joshi highlighted Dr. Mirdha's political lineage. She is the granddaughter of the late Nathuram Mirdha, who held the position of Rajasthan Congress chief and served as a Union Minister.

He also emphasized the local backing she enjoys within the Nagaur community. Joshi remarked, “Baba [alluding to the late Nathuram Mirdha] ki poti, Nagaur ki jyoti (Baba’s granddaughter, Nagaur’s light).”

In the upcoming 2024 elections, it is anticipated that Dr Mirdha, a member of the Jat community, will be the BJP's candidate for the Nagaur Lok Sabha seat.

Currently, this seat is held by Hanuman Beniwal of the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP), who had contested as a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate with BJP's support in the 2019 polls.

Both Dr Mirdha and Mr Beniwal hail from the Jat community, and in the 2019 elections, Mr Beniwal defeated Dr Mirdha.

However, since then, Mr. Beniwal has chosen to go his own way, outside the NDA alliance. Nagaur remains a constituency with a significant Jat population.

According to inside sources, the BJP is currently on the lookout for a strong candidate from Nagaur who can effectively garner Jat votes, not only in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections but also in the upcoming State Assembly polls within the state.
