Congress leader and MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira was arrested by Punjab police on Thursday morning in connection with an old case registered against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The arrest followed a raid conducted by the police at his Chandigarh residence at approximately 6:30 a.m., led by SP Manjeet Singh and DSP AR Sharma.
During the raid, Khaira went live on Facebook, engaging in a heated argument with the police and requesting a warrant for his arrest. The police informed him that he was being arrested based on an old NDPS case, as recommended by an SIT led by a DIG rank officer and two SSPs. However, Khaira claimed that the case had already been quashed by the Supreme Court.
Khaira's son, Mehtab Khaira, was also informed by the police that the MLA would be taken to Jalalabad police station.
Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring criticized the AAP government, labeling Khaira's arrest as an act of "political vendetta" aimed at intimidating the opposition and diverting attention from core issues.
The case dates back to March 2015, with the police registering an FIR under the NDPS
Act. Khaira's name emerged during the investigation, and he was later arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on charges of money laundering linked to the same case in 2021. However, he was granted bail in 2022. On February 16, 2023, the Supreme Court quashed the summoning order against Khaira in the drug case.
