Sitapur Congress MP Rakesh Rathore was released from jail on Wednesday morning after securing bail in a rape case. He had been in custody since January 30 following allegations that he sexually assaulted a 45-year-old woman under false promises of marriage and political advancement.

Rathore was initially granted bail on March 11 by the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court under Section 64 (rape) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). However, his release was delayed after Sitapur police filed a fresh chargesheet on the same day, adding Section 69 (sexual intercourse by deceit), which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. This required him to seek additional bail from a lower court.

On Tuesday, Chief Judicial Magistrate Gaurav Prakash approved Rathore’s bail under Section 69, allowing his release after two bail bonds of ₹1 lakh each were submitted. His brother, Anil Rathore, expressed gratitude to the legal system and stated that Rathore's supporters were pleased with the outcome.

According to the prosecution, the alleged victim accused Rathore of exploiting her trust and using his political influence to deceive her. The case has sparked political controversy, with opposition parties criticizing Congress for not taking decisive action against the MP.

Rathore was arrested while addressing a press conference to defend himself against the accusations. His legal team maintains that the charges are politically motivated, while police officials affirm that they acted based on credible evidence.

As Rathore walks free, the case remains under judicial scrutiny, with political and legal implications that could impact his career and the party’s standing in Uttar Pradesh.
