Congress MP Manickam Tagore has demanded a discussion in Lok Sabha on US bribery allegations against the Adani Group, criticizing the Modi government's silence. The opposition is pressing for accountability as the Winter Session begins, with financial and reputational stakes for India and the conglomerate in focus.
Congress MP Manickam Tagore has submitted an adjournment motion notice in the Lok Sabha, demanding an immediate discussion on allegations against the Adani Group stemming from indictments in the United States. Tagore criticized the Modi government’s silence, asserting that it undermines India’s integrity, economy, and global reputation.
The indictments accuse the Adani Group of agreeing to pay $265 million in bribes to Indian officials to secure contracts related to the country’s largest solar power project. While the Adani Group has denied the allegations as baseless, the charges have reignited opposition demands for government accountability.
In his notice, Tagore stated, "The prime minister must answer questions about his association with Adani and the implications of the scandal." Congress MP Manish Tewari also submitted an adjournment motion, focusing on how these allegations could affect India’s image as a business destination and the robustness of its regulatory frameworks.
The timing of these motions coincides with the commencement of the Winter Session of Parliament, where the opposition is set to prioritize discussions on the Adani controversy alongside issues such as Manipur violence.
The allegations have already had significant financial implications for the conglomerate. Last week, Adani’s 10 listed companies lost $27.9 billion in market value over two trading sessions, according to Reuters.

The Modi government has yet to comment on the matter, but the opposition sees this as an opportunity to highlight concerns about governance and transparency. The session is likely to witness heated debates as Congress and other opposition parties push for answers on the Adani issue.
