Rahul Gandhi, appointed as India's Leader of Opposition after a decade-long vacancy, faces a significant test in his new role. This development follows recent election gains by Congress and is seen as potentially strengthening India's democratic processes.

More specifically, in the political news, Rahul Gandhi from the Indian National Congress party has been deemed the Leader of Opposition in the Indian parliament, thus changing the paradigm of the country’s politics. This appointment has been made at a time that has had no substantive occupant in this significant constitutional position for ten years.
This move comes after the recent general elections where the Congress party won 99 seats which is actually above the required 55 seats(10% of the total 543) to make such a claim. The decision was made after a meeting with partners from the opposition wing of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).
Gandhi will be the Leader of Opposition which means she will be centre stage in the parliamentary affair and in the major decision-making processes. He will be a member of the important committees which are headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi such as the Committees for appointing leaders of important institution like India’s premier investigative police agency and the National Human Rights Commission among others.
In his first speech at the parliament in this new role, Gandhi called for the trust-based partnership and for the opposition to be listened to. Political analysts see this change as a positive sign in terms of strengthening democracy in India as it may bring more healthy and intensive discussion and deeper scrutiny in the legislative process.
The appointment also poses a major leadership challenge to Gandhi since the minister has not been particularly successful in previous positions. This is the first time in his long political career, he has been appointed to a constitutional body of this significance. Experts state that his performance in this capacity may ultimately determine his political prospects and the ability of the opposition to target the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Although Prime Minister Modi continues to rule India with the assistance from allies, his party failed to secure decisive majority during the latest polls. The increased opposition is likely to come from the Gandhian group, and would pose a much more effective check on government forthcoming parliamentary sessions.
While India politics is in a state of transition, the focus shall remain on Rahul Gandhi as he enters this new phase and how it will impact India’s democracy.
