Copa America 2024 a Disaster

The 2024 Copa America in the US was plagued by poor pitches, crowd troubles, and chaotic scenes at the final. The tournament's failures raise concerns about the country's readiness to host the 2026 World Cup.

The 2024 Copa America finished on Sunday in chaos and controversy and now the US is in question for the 2026 World Cup.

The tournament was supposed to be a showcase of Americas football passion instead it was a “world class failure” according to Argentine media. Problems started from the beginning with complaints about the pitch in NFL stadiums and half empty venues due to high ticket prices.

The Argentina vs Colombia final at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami was delayed 80 minutes because ticketless fans forced their way into the stadium. Clashes with police and security resulted in 27 arrests and 55 ejections. The gates were opened without ticket checks to prevent stampedes outside.

Throughout the tournament coaches and players were expressing their frustration. Uruguay’s Marcelo Bielsa called the organizers “a plague of liars” about the pitch and teams complained about security and refereeing.

Conmebol was heavily criticized for the organization of the event. With 8 of the Copa America venues set to host 2026 World Cup matches including the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami questions are being raised about the US ability to host big international football events.

James Reyes, chief of public safety for Miami-Dade County announced a full review of safety and security protocols for the World Cup. Meanwhile the Independent Supporters Council is confident that the host cities and planning committees will address the issues that came up during Copa America.
