A local court in Varanasi on Saturday granted the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) an extension of four weeks to conduct its survey within the Gyanvapi mosque complex.
The objective of the survey is to determine whether the 17th-century mosque was constructed on the site of a pre-existing Hindu temple.
Starting on Friday, the scientific survey was briefly paused around noon to accommodate Muslim prayers inside the mosque before resuming at 2:30 pm.
The court's decision to extend the survey period followed an application from the Government of India's standing counsel, Amit Srivastava, seeking more time for the ASI to complete its investigation. The final report is now scheduled to be submitted by September 2.
Earlier, the Allahabad High Court had authorized the survey to proceed, rejecting the concerns of the Muslim side that it could cause harm to the structure. The Supreme Court later affirmed this decision on August 4 but emphasized the use of non-invasive methods during the survey.
On the first day of the survey, the ASI team focused on capturing images and examining the layout of structures within the complex. Notably, the team reportedly discovered fragments of idols in the debris during their investigation.
It is noteworthy that the masjid committee eventually participated in the survey, agreeing to cooperate following the Supreme Court's decision, despite their initial boycott.
The survey's outcome holds immense significance for both religious communities and has attracted considerable public attention. The ASI's findings will play a crucial role in resolving the historical and religious debates surrounding the Gyanvapi mosque complex.
