Data Thieves Caught by The Hyderabad Police

The Cyberabad police (a wing of the Telangana police) has caught hold of a data thief

called Vinay Bharadwaj who has allegedly stolen data worth Rs. 66.9 Crores. He was

backed by a whole team engaged in this same pursuit and coordinating the criminal act

across 8 metropolitan cities and 24 states of India.

The Cyberabad police stated that the data was related to different categories such as,

“debit and credit card-holders, frequent flyers, demat account holders, designers,

chemists, business analysts, senior citizens, PAN card-holders, National Eligibility-cum-

Entrance Test students, high net-worth individuals, electricity consumers.”

How Was the Data Theft Carried Out?

The prime accused owned a website named ‘InspireWebz’ using which he collected

data from people and databases from other third parties all across the country.

Reportedly, the “data was stored and sold over Google Drive, and about 72 drive links

were found.” The Deputy Commissioner of the Cyberabad police also added,

“Bharadwaj’s other two associates also ran websites, and we’re yet to trace them and

understand how exactly they got access to so much data. Some of the data was sold for

as low as Rs 2,000.”

Importance of Data Privacy

Breach of data privacy is becoming an increasing concern for Indians. The states in

which the maximum reports of such breach can be found are UP, Maharashtra and

Delhi. Data protection requires collective action from government security agencies and

the internet service users as well. Awareness regarding the manner and methods by

which data can be breached must be delivered to the general public through the use of

institutions and different broadcasting agencies.
