As soon as the victim's family filed a case, the police began investigating. Chirag, a fourth-grader, went to the hand pump on the school premises because he was very thirsty. At this same location, the accused Ratiram Thakur was filling a bucket with water.

Chirag's father, Pannalal, says Thakur became enraged and began beating his kid for taking the bucket from the handpump to drink water from. Chirag was so touched by the experience that he told his family about it all the way home. Following their altercation, Thakur vowed to harm the family. Pannalal claimed that the principal dismissed his objections and instructed them to call the police.
