IMPHAL: At least nine people were killed and 10 sustained injuries in a terrorist attack on a village in Manipur's Khamenlok, the police said on Wednesday.

Agijang village:-

In a tragic incident that unfolded on Tuesday night, a gunfight erupted in Agijang village, situated on the border between Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts in Manipur. A group of armed assailants descended upon the village, resulting in a deadly confrontation with security forces.

The ensuing violence claimed the lives of nine individuals, while ten others sustained injuries, according to local police reports.

The gunfight was triggered when security forces swiftly arrived at the scene to counter the armed assailants. Imphal East police superintendent, K Shivakanta Singh, provided details on the tragic event, stating, "There was firing in the village around 10-10:30 pm, and nine people were killed and 10 others injured. All injured individuals have been admitted to the hospital, where the condition of one is stated to be critical."

It was further revealed that Assam Rifles, responsible for the security of the area, were promptly deployed to control the situation.

This unfortunate incident adds to the escalating violence that has plagued Manipur in recent weeks. Since May 3, violent clashes between the tribal Kukis, predominantly residing in the hill districts, and the Meiteis, the dominant community in Imphal Valley, have resulted in the death of at least 115 people and displaced approximately 40,000 others.

The initial spark of the conflict arose during a protest against a court order granting scheduled tribe status to Meities. Subsequently, the unrest rapidly spread throughout the state, leading to the imposition of curfews, internet suspensions, and the deployment of additional security forces.

Despite efforts to restore peace, tensions between the warring communities remain high. Prominent civil society organizations representing both the Meitei and Kuki communities recently declined participation in a peace committee established by the Union government to facilitate reconciliation.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the formation of the committee on June 1 as part of measures to alleviate tensions in the region.

The situation in Agijang village is now under control, with security forces ensuring stability in the area. However, this tragic incident serves as a reminder of the urgent need for lasting peace and reconciliation among the various communities in Manipur.

The authorities must continue their efforts to foster dialogue and understanding, to prevent further loss of life and displacement caused by ethnic violence in the region.
