Raghuraj Pratap Singh, also known as Raja Bhaiya, was
a former Uttar Pradesh minister and the head of the Jansatta Dal (Loktantrik).
His wife, Bhanvi Kumari, along with three others involved with a private
television news program, have been charged with defamation. Hazratganj police
have received a complaint alleging criminal conspiracy, slander, and insulting
the dignity of a woman.
Bhanvi Singh's sister, Sadhvi Singh, initiated this
case by filing a formal complaint. Defamation (under Section 500), using
obscene or indecent language (under Section 509), and criminal conspiracy
(under Section 120B) are the specific sections of the Indian Penal Code under
which this complaint has been filed.
These claims originate from an August 28 news program on Raghuraj Pratap Singh and his wife Bhanvi Singh's divorce. During the show, offensive claims were made about Sadhvi Singh's connection to the politician.
Sadhvi Singh insists that the allegations are
baseless, and she thinks they were created on purpose because of her and Bhanvi
Singh's continuing disagreement over some inherited property. She complained
that the station had not given her perspective on the incident due
consideration before airing the news.
In a disturbing turn of events, Sadhvi Singh has threatened to take extreme action by taking her own life if the perpetrators of this abuse are not held accountable.
The issue has been opened up by the local authorities.
In 2022, Raghuraj Pratap Singh, a seven-time MLA from the Kunda constituency in
the Pratapgarh district of Uttar Pradesh, was elected to the Assembly as the
founder and first member of the Jansatta Dal (Loktantrik). He has served as a
minister in both the BJP and SP governments of the state, as well as having run
for office as an independent.
What happens in court will have far-reaching effects for everyone concerned and may provide light on the tension between free speech and defamation in the context of media accountability.
