New Delhi, July 18, 2023 – In a
significant development in the high-profile sexual harassment case, Brij
Bhushan Singh, a prominent industrialist, was granted interim bail by a Delhi
court today. The court’s decision comes after Singh filed for bail on the
grounds of medical reasons and lack of substantial evidence against him.
Brij Bhushan Singh, the Chairman of a leading conglomerate, was accused of sexual harassment by a former employee in a complaint filed earlier this year. The alleged incident in 2022 triggered a wave of public outrage and drew widespread media attention.
On Tuesday, the Rouse Avenue
Court in Delhi granted interim bail to WFI President and BJP MP Brij Bhushan
Sharan Singh in the matter of female wrestlers’ sexual harassment for a period
of two days. Another defendant in the case, Vinod Tomar, was also given
provisional release by the court. A bail bond of $25,000 was used to obtain the
interim bail.
On the other hand, Singh’s supporters and legal team have welcomed the court’s decision, stating that it affirms the principle of “innocent until proven guilty.” They maintain that Singh’s deteriorating health condition warranted his release and that he would fully cooperate with the investigation to clear his name.
As the case proceeds, all eyes
will be on the court to deliver justice and ensure a fair trial that upholds
the rights of the survivors while considering the accused’s right to a fair
defence. The interim bail granted to Brij Bhushan Singh marks a crucial
juncture in this high-profile case, leaving many questions unanswered as the
legal process unfolds in the coming weeks.
In response to a complaint made by female wrestlers under
sections 354 (assault or criminal force to women with intent to outrage her
modesty), 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (Stalking), and 506 (criminal
intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Delhi Police filed a
chargesheet against Singh and Tomar on June 15.
