The Delhi government has applied very stringent water restrictions and penalties as New Delhi is currently in a severe water deficit, especially in the current hot summer period.

Delhi Water Minister Atishi on Wednesday urged that every effort be made to prevent the wastage of water as well as control the use of illegal connections in the capital. New penalties include a Rs 2,000 fine for washing cars with pipes or allowing water tanks to overflow.

Atishi accused the Haryana state of not releasing Delhi’s due allocation of water from the Yamuna River hence contributing to water scarcity. Measures to be implemented during the crackdown are as follows; Illegal water connections at construction sites and commercial buildings will be disconnected.

Under the new water rationing plan, areas including Greater Kailash, Lajpat Nagar, Hauz Khas, and surrounding areas in South Delhi will now receive piped water supply only once daily instead of twice.

The measures have been taken into consideration due to the hot weather that has been experienced for the past few weeks in Delhi with temperatures soaring high up to 45 degrees centigrade or 113 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperatures have gone high due to this they use water more often and the sources of water are limited.

The public has been advised to use water sparingly and endorse the measures in the fight against scarcity of water before the arrival of monsoons and in replenishing the sources of water.
