BJP MP and Wrestling Federation
of India outgoing chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is facing serious charges as
the Delhi Police filed a complete 1,500-page chargesheet against him with the
promised deadline of June 15.
The chargesheet, consisting of
evidence gathered during the investigation, includes sections 354, 354D, and
345A of the Indian Penal Code, which pertain to sexual harassment and stalking.
Security measures were heightened outside Singh's Delhi residence prior to the filing of the chargesheet. Over 180 individuals were questioned in connection with the allegations, and the investigation involved taking a complainant to the Wrestling Federation of India's office and requesting audio, video, and photo evidence from two top women wrestlers who made sexual assault accusations against Singh.
The Delhi Police made efforts to
gather additional information by reaching out to wrestling federations in other
countries, but as of now, no responses have been received. If any inputs are
received, a supplementary chargesheet will be filed to incorporate the new
information. Moreover, the police conducted interviews with Singh's relatives,
colleagues, and household staff at his residence in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh.
A 550-page cancellation report
was filed by the Delhi Police in the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual
Offences) case against Brij Bhushan. This case was based on allegations made by
the minor's father, who later retracted the charges in a fresh statement.
The cancellation report cites the lack of evidence and the father's statement as reasons for seeking the dismissal of the case. A hearing on the cancellation is scheduled for July 4. A cancellation report is typically filed when no corroborative evidence is found.
The minor wrestler's father
admitted to falsely accusing Brij Bhushan and revealed that his motivation
behind the false case was anger over his daughter's loss in the 2022 Under-17
Asian Championship trial final.
Earlier, the protesting wrestlers
had demanded that the chargesheet against Brij Bhushan be filed by June 15. In
response, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur assured the wrestlers that they will
fulfil their demand. However, the wrestlers warned that they would resume their
protests if there was a delay in filing the charge sheet.
