Delhi's eagerly awaited Urban Extension
Road-II (UER II), linking North Delhi to the Delhi-Jaipur highway, is on the
brink of opening within the next 2-4 months, according to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
The project is poised to significantly truncate the travel time to Indira
Gandhi International Airport, reducing it from a taxing two hours to a mere 20
minutes.
During an address to the Indian diaspora in
Prague, Czech Republic, on Sunday (October 1), Gadkari announced, "We have
successfully constructed the UER-II ring road in Delhi, slated to open within
the upcoming 2-3 months. Previously, avoiding this route would consume a
cumbersome two-hour journey to the airport. However, once UER-II's construction
commences in the next 3-4 months, you'll seamlessly reach the T3 airport within
20 minutes instead of the customary two hours."
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had earlier
confirmed the road's inauguration before the year's end, emphasizing Urban
Extension Road-II (UER-II) as Delhi's "lifeline." He has applauded
this project as a "game-changer" for the bustling city. "A
significant portion of Delhi's traffic congestion and pollution stems from the
traffic flow connecting North India to South India via Delhi," Gadkari
added. UER-II aims to reduce travel congestion, save time, and reduce
pollution."
In accordance with a report by Times of India,
Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a directive in August 2021 to the National
Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to finalize the second phase of UER-II, an
access-controlled highway, by August 2023.
The estimated cost of the project is a
staggering Rs 7,716 crore, allocated across five distinct packages, each
covering varying distances. The expansive Urban Extension Road-II spans a
length of 75 km, featuring six primary expressway lanes and four service road
lanes. Its journey commences from NH44 at Alipur and concludes at the
Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway on NH48 near Mahipalpur.
