Edgewood Fire Near I-280 Prompts Road Closures, Smoke Visible Across Redwood City and Woodside

The Edgewood Fire near I-280 in San Mateo County has spread across five acres, causing road closures and sending smoke across Redwood City and Woodside. Fire crews and aerial units are battling the blaze. Authorities halted its spread northbound but continue efforts on the southbound side, with no reopening time confirmed.
A fast-moving vegetation fire dubbed the Edgewood/280 Fire broke out on August 30 near Interstate 280 in San Mateo County, California, prompting an urgent multi-agency firefighting response. Located near Cañada Road in Woodside, the blaze quickly expanded to cover approximately five acres, with thick smoke visible across the surrounding areas, including Redwood City.
The fire, reported by Watch Duty, a non-profit wildfire tracker, led to a 3rd and 4th alarm response as firefighters rushed to protect nearby structures. As of the latest updates, the fire remains active on the southbound side of I-280, while forward progress has reportedly been halted on the northbound side.
San Mateo County officials confirmed that I-280 is closed in both directions between Farm Hill Boulevard and Edgewood Road. Traffic is being redirected to Highway 101, with no estimated time yet announced for reopening the affected freeway stretch. Redwood City authorities also issued alerts warning commuters to avoid the area.
CAL FIRE CZU’s San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit shared visuals and video updates showing plumes of smoke and the deployment of aerial firefighting support. At least 15 fire engines, two water tenders, fixed-wing aircraft, a helicopter, and hand crews have been assigned to the operation, along with a dozer to cut firebreaks.

While no injuries have been reported, the fire’s proximity to heavily trafficked roadways has caused major disruption and concern among local residents. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely and urge residents to stay away from the area and follow emergency alerts for updates.
