Caretaker CM Eknath Shinde has traveled to his native village amid ongoing uncertainty over Maharashtra’s next chief minister. The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance is finalizing its power-sharing formula, with a decision expected in an upcoming meeting in Mumbai.
Caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has canceled all appointments and traveled to his native village in Satara amid mounting suspense over who will lead Maharashtra’s government. Despite the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance’s decisive victory in the assembly elections, the coalition has yet to announce its chief minister.
Shinde’s move follows a high-level meeting in Delhi involving Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP National President JP Nadda, and key alliance leaders, including BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis and NCP’s Ajit Pawar. The meeting centered on finalizing the power-sharing formula, which reportedly includes a BJP chief minister and two deputy CMs—one each from the Shiv Sena and the NCP.
Describing the talks as “good and positive,” Shinde revealed that the final decision on the chief ministership will be made in an upcoming meeting in Mumbai. The uncertainty has fueled intense speculation, with each faction vying for influential cabinet positions.
The Mahayuti alliance, which won a comfortable majority in the November 23 election, has kept its decision under wraps, triggering political intrigue across the state. The BJP secured 132 seats in the 280-member assembly, while Shiv Sena and NCP won 57 and 41 seats, respectively.

Political analysts believe the delay stems from the complexity of balancing power among the coalition partners. As Maharashtra awaits clarity, Shinde’s return to his hometown signals a moment of reflection before the coalition unveils its leadership structure next week.
