In a bold move that sparked controversy, Elon Musk, the owner of social media giant X, formerly known as Twitter, declared the removal of a pivotal feature that enables users to block other accounts.

Musk's announcement has raised concerns about user safety and moderation on the platform, notably since he acquired the company last year.

The block function on X allows users to effectively prevent specific accounts from contacting them, viewing their posts, or becoming followers.

Elon Musk's X to eliminate user block feature, raising concerns about safety and moderation.

Musk revealed his decision via a post on the platform, clarifying that the block feature would be eliminated as a 'feature,' except for direct messages. The mute function, which lets users filter out content from designated accounts without notifying those accounts, will be retained.

The entrepreneur, who identifies as a staunch free speech advocate, has been criticised for his approach, which some perceive as irresponsible. Researchers have reported an uptick in hate speech and antisemitic content on the platform since Musk's takeover. Moreover, several governments have accused the company of inadequate content moderation.

In a bold move that sparked controversy, Elon Musk, the owner of social media giant X, formerly known as Twitter, declared the removal of a pivotal feature that enables users to block other accounts.

This alteration to the platform's functionalities might clash with regulations enforced by Apple's App Store and Google Play by Alphabet. Both tech giants emphasise that apps featuring user-generated content must offer mechanisms to block abusive users. Apple's requirement includes provisions for blocking abusive users. At the same time, Google Play mandates an in-app system for obstructing such content and users.

The decision has not received official responses from X, Google, or Apple.

Anti-bullying activist Monica Lewinsky urged X to preserve this "critical tool" for online safety. In response, Chief Executive Linda Yaccarino defended Musk's move, assuring users that their safety remains the platform's utmost priority. Yaccarino also hinted at ongoing developments, suggesting that the company is working on an improved alternative to the existing block and mute functions.

Elon Musk will reportedly oversee the product and engineering teams, while Yaccarino will lead other legal and sales divisions.

As the debate surrounding free speech, user safety, and content moderation continues, the fate of this change on social media platform X hangs in the balance.
